Antelope Island Bison Roundup

On Saturday, we went to the Bison Roundup at Antelope Island with my parents, my brother Tom, his wife Misty, and their kids and Jim & Lynette's kids. The bison were rounded up a few weeks ago, and what we went to see was the "working of the animals" at the corrals. This is when each bison has a turn in a squeeze chute for a visit with the vet. They test for disease and pregnancy, give shots, and sort out which ones are to be sold to cull the herd. The kids thought it was great. For me it's kind of whoop-de-do to watch, since I worked the roundup several years, and watching is nothing compared to chasing the bison down the lane into the chutes. It was fun to watch my kids reaction to the huge animals, and it was great to see some of my old co-workers. Tom with baby Jacob, Misty with Tim, and Monte (Misty's brother) with the backpack. Tom and Misty are visiting from Michigan, and it has been so fun to see them.

I guess the sign says "no parking," not no climbing.Every time we go to Nathan's school, Matt loves to see the fiberglass bison above the office. So seeing bison in real life was a real treat for him.

If you've never been to the roundup, and you live near-by, you should go next year. If you've never been to the island, you should make a point to visit. Right now the big bulls are hanging on the North side of the island, and will be there all winter. They are amazing to see. We saw three antelope cross the road right in front of us. It was so nice on Saturday, the kids played at the beach for a long time. The lake is approaching it's historic low, so there's a really long walk to get to the lake, but they had a blast doing it.
